A New Take on Spring/Summer 2018 Beauty Trends

Today’s post is a collaboration with the lovely Scarlet Gratton on the hottest spring/summer beauty trends this year. I know I know, it’s been a while since I’ve done a beauty post. Stay till the end to get to know Scarlet and show her some love – big thanks to her for her contribution to my little blog. Enjoy!

We don’t know about you, but beauty products and trends will always be exciting to us. Flipping through the pages of Vogue and discovering what’s the new cool thing that makeup artists have brought to the runway makes us a little giddy, and we can’t wait to discuss it. Today, we’re putting a little twist on it and we’ll be giving you our opinions on the hottest trends, and ideas and tips on how you could pull them off.

Bold, graphic liner

Scarlet: Great, and just when I’ve managed to master a simple cat eye! From glossy smudged lines, to negative space eyeliner, I’m seeing some very graphic looks on the runway that seem to completely skip eyeshadows. I do want to try them out because I kind of enjoy the clean, high-end fashion vibe of it all, but honestly it seems like a bit of hassle to do this every day. And I love my little Colourpop eyeshadows too much to stick only to bold eyeliner to get me through the night.

Janelle: They couldn’t be happy with just a cat eye, could they? I do love experimenting with eyeliner, and I may or may have tried to recreate some of these in the comfort of my bedroom. Not so much out in public – I’m much more of a natural makeup kinda gal, and it’s considerably more effort than a bit of mascara and my trusty brown kohl pencils. Maybe for special occasions though. Halloween anyone?

Crystal nails

Janelle: Ahh, if only I didn’t bite my nails. There’s something so beautiful about the gemstone effect, and I can see this being much more wearable than some other trends out there especially if paired with nude shades. Maybe I should get these for my next manicure, the sparkles might just convince me to stop chewing…

Scarlet: I’m a little boring when it comes to nails. I like ‘em neat, clean, and delicate, so I generally mostly use clear or nude nail polish and always make sure my hands are soft. However, nail art and crystal details are really in right now, and I can totally see the fun in that. Besides, gluing just a few shimmery crystals on your nails here and there is easy and makes for a perfectly glam detail.

Natural skin

Scarlet: Rather than heavy foundations, this year’s spring/summer fashion seems to be all about that natural, soft skin without a lot of makeup. Loving this trend, but I definitely think you need to have good, clear skin to pull it off. I’d suggest focusing on skincare instead of looking for high-coverage foundations. Personally, I keep my daily routine very consistent and I love all my Ultraceutical products because they’ve been working really well for me. Here’s a little trick I like to use for my “no makeup” makeup days: I take Mac’s Strobe Cream and mix in a drop of it with my tinted moisturizer, then rub it all gently into my face. This hides any redness and evens out my skin tone, but it also gives me this natural, lit-from-within kind of glow.

Janelle: I couldn’t agree more with Scarlet on looking after your skin rather than looking for a high coverage foundation to mask it all. I’m all about that natural, fresh faced look and I believe that healthy skin will always be in fashion no matter how crazy the trends that come and go. Here’s my tip: on your less made up days, apply a layer of tinted moisturiser and add a light sweep of highlighter to the high points of your face. Choose one with an undertone which matches that of your natural skin. This gives you that radiant skin that looks oh-so-natural, the kind that leaves people wondering what your skincare secrets are. Finish with some mascara and you’re good to go.

Pins and clips

Janelle: Such an easy way to jazz up any hairdo. Those of you who are growing out a fringe and finding yourself stuck in that awkward transition phase, just pin it up with one of these and you’re good to go.

Scarlet: Oh, I love hair clips! It’s actually a genius idea – do your regular low ponytail, but add a fun hairclip to the side of your head. Instant cuteness with no fuss at all!

Strategically placed glitter

Scarlet: Glitter was absolutely everywhere. I’ve seen models rocking it in their hairline, their eyelashes, even their lips. Of course, more subtle glitter was also on the runway, and this is probably what I’ll stick to this season (I mean, imagine trying to get glitter out of your hair). A touch of NYX’s Glitter Primer in the inner corner of my eye, a dot of shimmery dust, and voila! An easy way to take your eyeshadow to the next level. I can also see myself using glitter eyeliner to do my cut crease looks.

Janelle: In Nikkietutorials’ words, glitter fixes everything. I have to say, that glittery highlight isn’t something I’d do personally but a shock of glitter on the lid just transforms your entire eyeshadow look. Or a glittery ombre cut crease. Hmm, I think I may have to schedule in some time to play with makeup sometime soon. If you’re looking to incorporate some glitter into your eye makeup, I highly recommend the Fenty Beauty Galaxy Eyeshadow palette. Riri herself described it as glitter on glitter on glitter… you get the picture.

“Bitten” lips

Janelle: I absolutely adore this look – just oozes that natural flush we all try to recreate with things like blush and lip stains. Put the matte lippies away with this one, you just can’t go without a clear gloss on top – the glossier the better. I love the idea of pairing it with a nude champagne lid and lots of mascara. That classy yet sexy look? Consider it done.

Scarlet: That cherry pop, glossy, I’ve-just-spent-an-hour-snogging kind of look is downright delectable. I like to take a red or a bright pink lipstick, dab just a bit of it along the very middle of my upper and lower lip, and then use clear gloss and press my lips together to make it look blended. I find that simple lip balm also works here, for an even more natural look. Lips that look flushed, plump, and healthy!

So, how do you like the latest spring/summer trends? Any of them catch your eye? Whether you’re into the natural vibe, or you want to go all in with glitter, brightness, and colour, we definitely encourage experimentation. Put your own stylish twists to these trends and enjoy them!

  1. You know I’m almost tempted to do this and pick the boys up from school in full make up… except I’d be a contender for make up fails, and it would be a total disaster.

Fair play to the artists who can do this – I am in awe of their skill!

      1. Oh good grief, can you imagine? I’d have myself stabbed in the neck with those nails!

          1. I almost did that once… Longer nails are definitely not for me. 😀

  2. I’m so excited for all of these! Especially the eyeliner, I love the more graphic looks. Also ready for full coverage foundations to become a little less popular

  3. Ohhh I like a few of these trends. The bitten lips, natural skin s right up my street. Nails I cant have long because of my job, but I love the prettiness of them. I enjoyed this post, nice to meet you too Scarlett xx

  4. I am loving the natural skin look. I’ve already started wearing less foundation a while ago. Mostly wearing a little concealer and powder. My skin feels so nice without being weighed down with foundation. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Aah i love the crystal nails look, I could definitely see myself trying that with a jet black or dark purple nail polish beneath it! Great post overall xx

  6. Oooh love the cute hair clips and I am always 100% behind the natural skin look. Really liked the two views take on this post x

  7. I must admit, I’m quite boring with my make up! A bit of coverup, a light pink eyeshadow, mascara and a bit of blush, and I’m good to go. I find I just don’t have the patience to keep up haha, and I hate looking at pictures of myself and looking incredibly dated. I find my look transitions well between the years!

    1. I totally know what you mean, it’s fun to play around with new trends every so often but I’m guilty of playing it safe on a day-to-day basis too! The timeless stuff is timeless for a reason xx

  8. I enjoyed both of your takes on this. Great idea and interactive. Would be worth doing again on different products or pieces! I like a natural look all the time so no glitter for me or pouty lips.

  9. Thanks for the informative post. I always love to know what are latest trends in beauty and fashion industry. All trends are good except glossy lips as I am a fan of matte lips these days??

  10. I really like manicure with those little crystals on it. I though this style is not trendy anymore, but now I found this article about most beautiful maniciure for me. I usually use Opi Gel Color brand (https://www.enails.eu/fr/gel-nail-polish/opi-gelcolor.html) as they have some polishes that contains cristals. Could you recommend any more brands that are similar to Opi? I will really appreciate all your replies :))
